About Mitochondrial DNA Testing (X-SV Maternal Lineage Test)
The mtDNA test is based on the mitochondrial DNA sequence variation that is passed on from females to their offspring. With this test we can determine if two or more people (male or female) are related through their maternal lineage. The test is also used between siblings who wish to confirm if they share the same biological mother.
Males do not pass the X-SV they inherited from their mother to their children, only females pass it on to their offspring. It is important to note that an mtDNA test cannot tell you the nature of the relationship between test participants (eg. aunt and nephew or grandmother and granddaughter); the test will only tell you whether you share a common maternal line. It is however, an extremely accurate test and will provide you with very accurate results. The price of the Mitochondrial DNA Test is £299.
Note that results for an MtDNA test are available between 20 to 30 business days. We do not offer an express testing option on this type of test.
Note: We can only guarantee standard result turnaround time when testing takes place solely using oral swab samples. Using a forensic sample for your test may lead to an increase in turnaround time.
MtDNA testing can only be used to confirm a shared maternal lineage. It cannot tell you anything about your paternal lineage. To learn whether two or more males share the same paternal blood line, we suggest a Y chromosome test. As with the Y-chromosome, Mitochondrial DNA has an infrequent mutation rate. This low mutation rate helps make the test all the more reliable. Read more information about Y chromosome testing.
