What Does Nail Drug Testing Consist Of?

As nails grow, substances contained in the bloodstream, such as drugs, pass from the blood vessels underneath them into the keratin fibres of which the nails are made and become trapped in them. Because of this, the presence of drugs can be detected for up to 12 months.

Sample Collection

A sample of approximately 10mg of nails is required for Nail Drug Testing. Either fingernails or toenails can be used, without mixing both types of nails in the same sample. One nail is sufficient if the nail is 5mm or longer, but more nails will need to be clipped if the nails are short. Always collect the nail as close to the nail bed as possible.
